Norton Live Update Half Dead

by Steve Shank

When you turn automatic updates on, it does not update your software! My clients' have not found this intuitively obvious. Automatic update will update your virus signatures, but leave your software old, backward, vulnerable and in need of update. Therefore, even if you have automatic update on, monthly you must run the program control center and run the live update from there which will check program components for update.

So, if you do a Live Update, you get your software updated. But if you enable live update so it runs automatically, you do not. I recently saw a client who had over 32 megabytes of updates to do even though she'd had auto update on. Now it is true that this includes their firewall, but, the size of the Norton program and it's components is excessive.

Add to this the fact that the normal license renewal does not include program upgrades and that program upgrades over the Internet often fail, and you have a program I do not recommend.
